Leg Extension tutorial
The leg extension is an isolation machine exercise that directly strengthens the quadriceps apart from other muscles. It is useful for front-thigh definition, finishing a leg workout after compound lifts, and for beginners thanks to how easy it is to learn.
How to perform
- Adjust the backrest so your knees line up with the machine's pivot point.
- Sit with your back against the pad and place the roller on your lower shins just above the ankles.
- Hold the side handles to keep your body steady.
- Straighten your legs by contracting your quads until your knees are nearly fully extended.
- Pause for one second at the top and squeeze your quads.
- Lower your legs slowly and under control without letting the weight stack touch down.
Breathing: Exhale as you straighten your legs and inhale as you lower them.
Key tips
- Keep your hips on the seat throughout.
- Take about two to three seconds to lower the weight.
- Keep your toes pointing up for even tension on the thighs.
Common mistakes
- Kicking the weight up with momentum and lifting the hips off the seat.
- Placing the pad incorrectly on the ankle or too high on the shin.
- Snapping the knees into a hard lockout with heavy weight.
Safety: People with front-knee pain or ligament injuries should use light weight and a limited range, or opt for a shallow, controlled squat.
