Hip Abduction Machine tutorial

The hip abduction machine is an isolation exercise where you sit and push the pads apart. It strengthens the gluteus medius and minimus, which are key for pelvic stability and preventing the knees from caving in. It suits beginners and anyone wanting better glute shape and knee stability.

How to perform

  1. Sit on the machine with your back against the backrest.
  2. Place the pads against the outside of your knees or thighs with legs together.
  3. Grip the handles and brace your core.
  4. Push your thighs outward as far as you can without rocking.
  5. Squeeze your glutes briefly at the end of the movement.
  6. Bring your legs back together slowly without letting the weights touch.
Breathing: Exhale as you push the legs apart and inhale as you bring them together.

Key tips

  • Leaning slightly forward from the hips increases glute involvement.
  • Move slowly and with control rather than with bounces.
  • Keep your hips planted on the seat.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the torso to force the legs open
  • Using heavy load with a very short range
  • Letting the pads snap back on the return
Safety: People with hip pain should start light or use a banded clamshell on the floor instead.
