Tutorial Farmer's Walk
The farmer's walk is a functional exercise where you hold heavy dumbbells in each hand and walk a distance with tall posture. It builds grip, trap, core and leg strength together and improves posture. It suits beginners through advanced trainees, with intensity adjusted by the load.
How to perform
- Place the dumbbells beside your feet and pick them up with a squat or deadlift.
- Stand tall, pull your shoulders back and down and brace your core.
- Hold the dumbbells firmly at your sides.
- Walk forward with short, controlled steps.
- Cover a set distance or time, such as 20 to 40 meters.
- Stop and lower the dumbbells to the floor with a flat back and bent knees.
Breathing: Take short, steady breaths while walking and keep your core braced.
Key tips
- Keep your head up and eyes forward.
- Squeeze the handles hard to keep your wrists straight.
- Don't let the dumbbells swing or bang against your thighs.
Common mistakes
- Slouching or leaning to one side
- Taking long, fast strides that disrupt balance
- Picking the dumbbells up with a rounded back
Safety: People with back pain or wrist problems should start with light weights and short distances.
