Dumbbell Shrug tutorial

The dumbbell shrug is done by holding dumbbells at your sides and lifting the shoulders toward the ears to strengthen the upper trapezius. Having the load at your sides creates a more natural path, making it ideal for beginners and home workouts.

How to perform

  1. Stand tall holding dumbbells at your sides, palms facing your thighs.
  2. Keep your feet hip-width apart and arms straight.
  3. Keep your chest open and chin slightly tucked.
  4. Lift your shoulders straight up toward your ears.
  5. Pause for one to two seconds at the top and squeeze your traps.
  6. Lower your shoulders slowly.
Breathing: Exhale as you shrug up and inhale as you lower.

Key tips

  • Move vertically only; don't roll the shoulders.
  • Keep the elbows straight so the biceps don't help.
  • The pause at the top matters more than heavy weight.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling the shoulders in circles.
  • Bending the elbows while shrugging.
  • Pushing the head and neck forward.
Safety: People with neck or shoulder pain should use light dumbbells with higher reps.
