Correct form for Cable Crunch

Cable Crunch tutorial

The cable crunch trains the rectus abdominis against adjustable resistance by kneeling and curling the spine downward. Because the load can be progressed gradually, it suits intermediate lifters looking for stronger, more defined abs.

How to perform

  1. Attach a rope to the high pulley and select an appropriate weight.
  2. Kneel facing the machine and hold the rope ends beside your head or in front of your forehead.
  3. Sit your hips back slightly and keep them fixed throughout.
  4. Contract your abs to round your spine and bring your elbows toward your thighs.
  5. Pause briefly at the bottom and squeeze your abs fully.
  6. Return slowly to stretch the abs without letting the weight stack touch.
Breathing: Exhale as you crunch down and inhale as you return.

Key tips

  • Move by rounding your spine, not by hinging at the hips.
  • Keep your hands fixed so your arms don't do the work.
  • Choose a load you can control for 10–15 full reps.

Common mistakes

  • Sitting back onto the heels and hinging at the hips instead of crunching.
  • Pulling the rope with the arms and shoulders.
  • Going too heavy with a shortened range.
Safety: Those with disc problems should use a light load or choose planks and basic crunches instead.
