Band Lat Pulldown tutorial
The band lat pulldown is a home alternative to the cable pulldown that strengthens the lats and upper back by pulling from overhead. It is a simple, low-risk choice for beginners and anyone working toward their first pull-up.
How to perform
- Anchor the band over the top of a door or to a high, secure point.
- Kneel or sit facing the anchor and hold the handles with arms extended overhead.
- Lift your chest and lean back slightly.
- Pull your shoulder blades down and drive your elbows toward your sides until the handles reach your chest.
- Pause briefly and squeeze your lats.
- Return your arms slowly overhead.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull down and inhale as your arms return overhead.
Key tips
- Think of driving your elbows down toward your pockets.
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
- Keep your torso steady and don't use body weight to pull.
Common mistakes
- Anchoring the band insecurely over the door.
- Leaning far forward or back while pulling.
- Letting the arms fly back up quickly.
Safety: Those with limited shoulder mobility should work only in a pain-free range or anchor the band slightly in front of the body.
