Lat Pulldown tutorial
The lat pulldown is a machine pulling exercise that strengthens the lats and upper back with adjustable resistance. It mimics the pull-up pattern and is ideal for beginners and anyone who can't yet perform pull-ups.
How to perform
- Adjust the thigh pad so your legs are locked in snugly.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width, palms facing away, and sit down.
- Lift your chest and lean back slightly.
- Pull your shoulder blades down and bring the bar to your upper chest.
- Pause briefly and squeeze your lats.
- Let the bar rise slowly until your arms are straight and you feel a lat stretch.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull the bar down and inhale as it rises.
Key tips
- Drive your elbows down toward your sides, not backward.
- Keep your torso steady and don't rock to pull the weight.
- Keep your wrists straight and hook the bar with your fingers.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the bar behind the neck, which strains the shoulders.
- Leaning back too far and turning it into a row.
- Letting the bar fly back up quickly.
Safety: People with limited shoulder mobility should shorten the range or use a close neutral-grip handle.
