Cable Shrug tutorial
The cable shrug is an isolation exercise for the upper traps, and the constant cable tension keeps the muscle working through the entire movement. It builds the neck and shoulder area and supports shoulder blade stability, and it is simple for beginners.
How to perform
- Attach a straight bar or two handles to the low pulley.
- Stand facing the machine and grip the bar shoulder-width apart with palms facing down.
- Stand tall, let your arms hang fully straight and brace your core.
- Lift your shoulders straight up toward your ears.
- Squeeze your traps at the top and pause for one to two seconds.
- Lower your shoulders slowly until you feel a full stretch in the traps.
Breathing: Exhale as you shrug up and inhale as you lower.
Key tips
- Move straight up and down and avoid rolling your shoulders.
- Keep your elbows straight so the biceps don't take over.
- Keep your head and neck neutral and don't jut your chin forward.
Common mistakes
- Rolling the shoulders forward or backward during the lift.
- Bending the elbows and pulling the weight with the arms.
- Using a short range of motion with no pause at the top.
Safety: People with neck pain or tension headaches should start light and stop if they feel neck pain or dizziness.
