Standing Cable Chest Press tutorial
The standing cable chest press is a compound exercise that works the chest, front shoulders and triceps while engaging the core for balance. Because the load is easy to control and gentle on the joints, it is very suitable for beginners.
How to perform
- Set both pulleys at about chest height and grab the handles.
- Step forward and stand in a split stance with one foot forward and one back.
- Hold the handles beside your chest with elbows bent and slightly below shoulder height.
- Brace your core and press the handles straight forward until your arms are nearly straight.
- Squeeze your chest at the end and pause briefly.
- Return the handles slowly to your chest.
Breathing: Exhale as you press forward and inhale as you return.
Key tips
- Distribute your weight between both feet so you aren't pulled forward.
- Bring the handles slightly closer together at the end to increase the chest squeeze.
- Keep your torso still and avoid twisting.
Common mistakes
- Leaning too far forward and using body weight to push.
- Arching the lower back from not bracing the core.
- Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears.
Safety: People with shoulder or lower-back pain should choose a light weight and stop if they feel pain or lose their balance.
