Stair Climber tutorial

The stair climber is a machine with continuously moving steps where you climb as if going up stairs. It is an intense cardio workout that works the glutes, quads and calves while training the heart and lungs. It suits people with moderate fitness looking for high calorie burn and lower-body conditioning.

How to perform

  1. Step onto the machine and hold the side rails lightly.
  2. Start at a slow speed to get in rhythm with the steps.
  3. Keep your torso upright or with a slight hip hinge.
  4. Place your whole foot on each step and push through the heel to climb.
  5. After warming up, gradually increase the speed to your target level.
  6. Slow down at the end and stop the machine fully before stepping off.
Breathing: Breathe deeply and rhythmically, setting the intensity so you don't become severely breathless.

Key tips

  • Don't lean your weight on the rails; touch them only for balance.
  • Take full steps and push through the heels for more glute work.
  • Choose a speed you can sustain without hanging on the rails.

Common mistakes

  • Hanging on the rails and reducing effective body weight
  • Stepping only on the balls of the feet
  • Hunching heavily over the machine
Safety: People with knee pain or heart conditions should start very slowly or use the elliptical or treadmill walking instead.
