Standing Quad Stretch tutorial

The standing quad stretch is done by holding one ankle or foot behind the body and drawing the heel toward the glutes. This simple stretch releases the front of the thigh, also practices single-leg balance, and suits all levels for cooling down after running or leg training.

How to perform

  1. Stand tall and hold a wall or support with one hand for balance if needed.
  2. Bend one knee and grasp that ankle or foot with the same-side hand.
  3. Gently pull your heel toward your glutes.
  4. Keep your knees together with the bent knee pointing down.
  5. Tuck your pelvis slightly forward and hold for 20 to 30 seconds.
  6. Release the leg slowly and repeat on the other side.
Breathing: Breathe slowly and steadily without holding your breath.

Key tips

  • Squeeze the glute on the bent-leg side for a deeper stretch.
  • Keep your torso upright; don't lean forward.
  • Keep the standing leg slightly soft, not locked.

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back instead of stretching the thigh
  • Letting the bent knee drift out to the side
  • Pulling the foot too hard and straining the knee
Safety: People with knee pain or balance problems can do this stretch lying on their side or use a towel around the ankle.
