Standing Calf Stretch tutorial

The standing calf stretch is a simple, practical move that improves the flexibility of the calf muscles and Achilles tendon using only a wall for support. It helps improve ankle mobility, ease calf tightness after running or walking, and support better squat technique.

How to perform

  1. Stand facing a wall about one step away and place your hands on it at shoulder height.
  2. Step one foot forward and bend that knee slightly.
  3. Take a long step back with the other leg, knee straight and toes pointing forward.
  4. Keep the back heel pressed into the floor and gently move your hips toward the wall until you feel a stretch in the calf.
  5. Hold at a mild stretch for 20-30 seconds.
  6. To stretch the deeper calf muscle, bend the back knee slightly and hold again, then switch legs.
Breathing: Breathe slowly and steadily throughout the stretch and relax a little further with each exhale.

Key tips

  • Keep the back foot pointing straight ahead, not turned out.
  • Keep your body in a straight line from head to back heel.
  • You can do this stretch daily, especially after running.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the back heel lift off the floor.
  • Bending at the waist instead of moving the hips forward.
  • Bouncing to force a deeper stretch.
Safety: People with an Achilles tendon injury or inflammation should stretch very gently and stop if they feel sharp pain in the heel or calf.
