Battle Ropes tutorial

Battle ropes are a high-intensity cardio exercise where waving heavy ropes works the shoulders, back and core at the same time. They raise your heart rate quickly and suit interval training in the gym.

How to perform

  1. Hold one end of the rope in each hand and stand with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Bend your knees slightly, push your hips back a little and keep your back flat.
  3. Brace your core and hold your hands in front of you at about waist height.
  4. Raise one arm while lowering the other so the ropes make alternating waves.
  5. Keep a steady rhythm and send the waves all the way to the anchor point.
  6. When your set time ends, lower the ropes gently and rest.
Breathing: Breathe in a short, rhythmic pattern and never hold your breath.

Key tips

  • Start with short 20–30 second intervals followed by equal rest.
  • Generate the movement from the shoulders and whole body, not just the wrists.
  • Keep your feet planted and stable.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the lower back and leaning too far forward.
  • Making small, weak movements so the wave never reaches the end.
  • Holding your breath during the set.
Safety: People with shoulder or lower-back pain should reduce duration and intensity and keep good form. Stop immediately if you feel dizzy or have chest pain.
